This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Ralph,' from the French Raoul, diminutive Raoulin (whence our Rawlin and Rowling) and second diminutive Raoulet, whence Rowlett and Rowlatt; compare Emmett from Emma' or Hewlett from Hew (Hugh).
'June 25, 1679. Mr. John Rawlett appointed to Lectureship' (of St. Nicholas, Newcastle-on-Tyne). He married a daughter of a Mr. Butler. 'They had been some time in love together, but he falling sick (at her request, and that she might bear his name) married her upon his deathbed, and left her both a maid, a wife, and widow': Brand's Newcastle.

In 1775, John Rowlatt was a Drayton freeholder, and Thomas Rowlatt was a Welham freeholder (N.). The name is also established in the adjacent county of Northampton.
