This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Roxburgh,' capital of the Scottish county of that name.
From the town of the name in Roxburghshire. Sometime before 1153 Adam de Rogesburg witnessed a charter by David I in favor of Cambuskenneth Abbey (Cambus., 57), and between 1163-85 Walter of Rokeburg witnessed charters by Richard, bishop of St. Andrews (RPSA., p. 179. RD., p. 58). About the same date the "terra abbacie de Munros" was granted by William the Lion to Hugh de Rokesbure, clericus regis (RAA., I, 95). This Hugh de Roxburgh was chancellor of the kingdom and bishop elect of Glasgow (Dowden, p. 299). He died in 1199. William of Roxburgh was cellarer of Newbattle Abbey in 1291 (Bain, II, 522), and John of Rokesburg was procurator for the monks of Kelso in their dispute with William Folkard in 1295 (Kelso, 203). William of Rokesburgh was master of the Maison Dieu (domus Dei) of Berwick in 1332 (Neubotle, 153,155), and John Rokesburgh was charged with breaking parole in 1358 (Bain, IV, 25).
