Royan Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(Celtic) Red, Red-Haired [Irish and Gaelic ruadh (dh mute), red + the diminutive suff. -án]
Ó Ruadháin A Connacht name cognate with Ruane. SIF 132
This is a form of Ó Ruadhain (see More Irish Families pp. 209-211) fairly numerous in north Connacht.
The townland of Gortyroyan near Ballinasloe is Gort Uí Ruadháin in Irish, indicating that Royan was once a synonym of Ruane in the Ui Maine country also. As might be expected Royan has sometimes been altered to Ryan in Co. Mayo and Co. Roscommon.
A somewhat similar name, Ruvane, belongs almost exclusively to south Mayo. I cannot say for certain, but I suggest that it is yet another form of Ó Ruadháin.
