'red, red-haired,' from Latin rufus, red. Rufus and Ruffus are common in the English Hundred-Rolls. Radulphus Ruffus witnessed several Angus charters by William the Lion between 1189 and 1199 (RAA., I, p. 17, 23, 28, 27; Panmure, II, 84). John Ruffus was shipowner and burgess of Berwick, 1224 (Bain, I, 883), early in the thirteenth century Eggou Ruffus made a grant to the Priory of May, and among the witnesses was Robertus Ruffus (RPSA., p. 382; May, 26), David Ruffum de Forfar, a charter witness in the reign of Alexander II (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 344), and Michael Ruffus was a Culdee of St. Andrews in 1250 (Reeves, Culdees, p. 232). Ricardus Ruffus was juror on an inquest made at Traqueyr, 1274 (Bain, II, 34), John Ruffo was burgess of Dundee, 1281 (HP., II, p. 223), and Donald Ruffo had a remission in 1427 (Rose, p. 126). This last may be a Latinizing of Gaelic ruadh (Roy).
