This surname is derived from a nickname. 'Rumbelow,' a sobriquet for a sailor. Rumbelow was the sailor's' Heave ho of later days, and the burden of all early sea-songs. In 'The Squire of Low Degree' it is said—

'Your mariners shall synge arow, Heyhow, and rumbylow.'

Halliwell says, 'The burden of the Cornwall furry-day song is, "With halantow rumbelow."'

As seen below, Rumbelow is found as a Cornish surname. 'Well, old Rumbelow, how are you?' would be the kind of way in which the sobriquet arose. The Constable of Nottingham Castle in 1369 was one Stephen Rumbilowe (v. my English Surnames, 2nd edit.)
