According to the late Dr. Alexander Carmichael there was formerly at Barraglas in Glenlonain a family of Macgalmans who had a tanning business on the bank of the river Neannt. From stripping baik from the trees for the tanning business they were known throughout the district as na Rusgain, na Rusgairean, "the peelers," "the bark peelers," and as Clann Rusgain, "the bark peeilng family." They thus lost their clan name in their occupation name, like others in the Highlands (Celt. Rev., II, p. 344-5). uhn Thomas Risken, merchant in Edinburgh, 1785, and John Rusken, 1806, ere in record (Butler, The Tron Kirk of Edinburgh, 1906, p. 341). Weekley suggests (p. 34) that English Ruskin may have come from Rosekin, and quotes Andrew Rosekin from English Patent Rolls.
