(English or Scandinavian) belonging to Rutland, anciently Roteland, Rotland [Orig. uncertain; but the prob. meaning is ‘root-land’-Middle English rot(e, Old Norse rót (for wrót), a root (Old Norse róta = Old English wrótan, to root up), as the county was formerly noted for its forests, which are “now almost wholly destroyed” (but the roots or stumps may at first have been left). If the county had been named from its red soil the old name would have been Rodeland instead of the consistent Roteland or Rotland.
