From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the old lands of Ryburn in the parish of Dunlop, Ayrshire. William of Raeburn witnessed a deed of resignation of lands in the barony of Drumelzier, 1331 (Hay, 9). Andrew de Raburn, burgess of Glasgow, 1430, and John of Raburn, witness there, 1454 (LCD., p. 178,247). Thomas Raburn was vicar in the choir of Glasgow, 1468 (REG., 393), Elizabeth Raburn in Lanark was sued in 1488 (Lanark, p. 3), and John Raburn held a land and gamen in Glasgow before 1494 (REG., p. 487). Robert Ryburn witnessed a Caldwell sasine, 1496 (Caldwell, I, p. 50), James Rabum was chosen "Abbot of vnresson" in Haddington, 1540 (Mill, Plays, p. 252), and Jonet Ryburne had a liferent in a back tenement in Glasgow, 1587 (Protocols, x). The surname early travelled north to Aberdeen, where David Riborn was admitted burgess, 1409 (NSCM., I, p. 3). John de Raburn appears there as burgess and guild brother, 1433-38 (ibid. p. 4; SCM., V, p. 42), Thomas Reburne or Ryburne was goldsmith, 1463 (CRA., p. 26), Gilbert Riburne admitted burgess, 1480, and William Raburne in 1500 (NSCM., I, p. 28, 41).
