A forest officer, being mounted, and having the supervision of a large district. In the ballad of William of Cloudesly, the king, rewarding the dexterity of the archer who shot the apple from his child's head, says:

"I give thee eightene pence a day,

And my bowe thou shalt here;

And over all the north countre I make thee chyfe rydere."

Or Foliot, a baronial family. The English Ryders descend from the Foliots, Sires of Omonville, or Osmondville, Normandy, whose probable ancestor was Osmond, a companion of Rollo. In 1050 Roger Foliot granted the advowson of Omonville to Essay Abbey (Gall. Christ. xi. 237; De Gerville, Anc. Chateaux). Several of this family came to England at the Conquest, of whom William F. held lands 1086 from the See of Canterbury, and Otbert F. large estates in Northiants, Herts, and elsewhere from Fitz-Ansculph. His son Adelulf had issue Roger Foliot, who in 1165 returned his barony in Nortliants as fifteen fees and a half (Lib. Niger). From William (t. William I.) came his son Henry, who t. Henry 1. m. Lucia, dau. and coheir of Jordan Briset, a great baron (founder of St. John’s Priory, Clerkenwell). He had-1. William F., whose line was seated in Worcester (Mon. Angl. ii. 505); and 2. Jordan Foliot, who obtained estates in Yorkshire, and was the first to bear the name of ‘De Rither.’ He in 1165 held five fees of ancient enfeoffment from the barony of Pontefract (Lib. Niger). Thomas de Ryther, his son, confirmed his father’s gift to Fountains Abbey (Burton, Mon. Ebor., 154). William de R., a benefactor to Nun-Appleton, occurs as William ’Foliot’ granting lands to Nostel Priory (Ib. 304,306). From him descended the Rythers or Ryders, Lords of Hare- wood, Yorkshire, and the Earls of Harrowby.
