Ryll Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The history of the Ryll surname can be tracked back to the Reformation in Germany. The spelling of the name has changed due to migration to various countries from 1535-1945. The meaning of the name is thought to be 'furrow', as in a farm field furrow. In 1535 there were Ryll families in Friesland (off shore northern islands between Germany & Netherlands), who were reformers, and the local Catholic rulers told them to deny their faith or they would be killed, so they fled to Prussia, then Poland; and when Catherine the Great of Russia invited ethnic Germans to move to Russia to farm, those descendants of the original Ryll families from Friesland did just that. Of interest, through the many decades and migrations, current day Ryll's remain Lutherans. The name was also spelled as Reuhl, Ryl, and Rühl.
