Sabino Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Meaning of the name Sabino. It originates in the Latin Sabinus and is related to the Sabinos, and means "of the race of Sabinos". The Sabines are an Italic people, who dwelt in the mountains on Lazio, near Rome and one conquered in the year 280.The origins of the Sabino people were not determined with complete certainty, but they are believed to have been in Lazio since prehistory, and once the republic was established, they were assimilated and became citizens of Rome. They inhabited the hills near Rome in Lazio, situated to the west of the Apennines, occupying the entire eastern bank of the river Nera and on both sides of the Velino, until reaching the Tiber and the Annio in the south. There are two hypotheses about the origin of the Sabino people: one affirms that they come from the peninsula, the other, that they are the result of a Greek colonization.

Italy: Some ancient authors place the origin of the Sabines in the same Italy, be it, or as an autochthonous people, or descended from the Umbrian or Aborigines.Cato and Dionysius of Halicarnassus said that the Sabines originated from Testrina, a rustic village on the outskirts of Amiterno, on the slopes of Gran Sasso. Dionysius of Halicarnassus - citing as a source to Zenódoto de Trezém - states that they are a branch of the Umbros. Between the two peoples, Umbros and Sabinos, there are similar traits, such as the veneration of the Sanco deity - principal among the Sabines, but also present among the Umbros - and other cultural similarities were found. In addition, by the study of its language, one can glimpse a common origin to all sabélicos towns, although its origin can not be determined.According to Dionysius of Halicarnassus, the Sabines expelled the Aborigines from that region whose center was the city of List. These "Aborigines" emigrated to the Lazio, where, mixed with other groups, they originated the town of the Latins. Finally Marco Terêncio Varrão, born in Reate, states that his ancestors descended from the Aboriginal people who lived in Central Italy.

Greece: On the other hand, there is the hypothesis, less probable, insinuated by Plutarch that considers to the sabinos like a colony of the Lacedemonians. Plutarch considers that, being Lacedaemonians, they are well versed in the use of weapons. The tradition of conferring on the Sabine Greek origin appears from the fourth century BCE. A group of Spartans would have landed on the Tyrrenian shores of present-day Terracina and then climbed into the inner zone until they reached the Apennines. However, this would be for the Sabines an inverse path to that proposed in most historical sources. That is, descending from Gran Sasso. Although on the other hand the analysis of the writing used by the Sabines led some scholars to find similarity with the Greek alphabet and to say that the Sabines would have received it directly from the Greeks without Etruscan mediation
