Sadler, Saidler. From the occupation, a maker of saddles. Sirildis Saddeler, wife of Michael Saddeler, burgess of Roxburgh, made a grant to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1330 (Kelso, 491). Robert, called Sadler, was lord of Westirsoftelaw in 1354 (ibid., p. 302). Hugh Sellator , bailie of Ayr in 1415, appears in the same year as Hugh Saddeler (Ayr, p. 9, 11). John Sadlare was owner of a tenement in Edinburgh in 1425 (RMS., II, 23), and Thomas Sadlare held a land in Irvine in 1426 (Irvine, I, p. 130). John Sadillar and Hugh Sadillar were witnesses to a notarial instrument in 1429 (Cambus., 90), Robert Sadelare is recorded as burgess of Perth in 1488 (Methven, p. 29), John Sadillare was a witness in Brechin in 1497 (REB., II, p. 143), Nicol Sadillar was a witness in Linithgow in 1533 (Johnsoun), Marion Sadler in Lauder Walkmylne, 1635 (Lauder).
