User-submitted Reference
The Saker is a hunting falcon (not a peregrine), 'falco sacer', which roamed naturally from the plains of Hungary, as far East as China. It is still bred by the Arab nations for traditional hunting of small prey, and features on stamps and in art works to this day. There is a Saker Park in Jerusalem. This name is not derived from Sacker, as many purveyors of heraldry will claim.
There are Jewish, Lebanese and Arab people with the surname of Saker living today. The earliest known mention of Saker as a surname in England dates from the about 1280. Saker probably entered England as an occupational name when the Crusaders returned to introduce the sport of falconry. John Saker was John who looked after the Sakers in the Mews, but this is conjecture. In the heirarchy of who could own which bird in falconry, the Saker was allotted to a Knight. The king had an eagle. The English Saker family seemed to mostly live in southern counties - Kent, Surrey, and Greater London. Merton, London 1801 to present day. Bletchingly Surrey 1700 - 1800 and longer. Betchworth Surrey 1550 to 1700 and longer. One branch of the Saker family, in Kent, England, was awarded a coat of arms, and they were involved in the Spice Trade to the East Indies, and the Virginia tobacco trade.
