Salisbury Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Salisbury,' a city in Wiltshire.

Robert de Salisbyre, Wiltshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

1547. Married — Henry Salysberye and Jone Mathewe: St. Michael, Cornhill.

(a) Local, 'of Salesbury.' The Lancashire Salisburys hail from Salesbury, a village-parish between Blackburn and Ribchester. The corruption is a very slight one, and simply imitative of the name of the southern cathedral city.

Ralph Salisbury, of Hindley, 1670: Wills at Chester.

Ann Salisbury, of Hindley, 1674: ibid.

Thomas Salisbury, of Chipping, 1669: Lancashire Wills at Richmond.

Richard Salisbury, of Chipping, 1663: ibid.

Henry Salisbury, of Chepin, 1626 ibid.

The last three entries place my statement of a local Lancashire origin beyond the range of controversy.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

(English) belonging to 1 Salisbury (Wilts) = Searo’s Stronghold [Anglo-Saxon Chron., Searoburh, Seresburh, etc.: the pers. name is from Old English searo, armour, arms; device; skill + burh, a stronghold] “Ego Adelsinus Sarisberiensis ecclesiæ episcopus.”—Cart. Sax. no. 1228 (A.D. 969).

2 Salesbury (Lancs) [Of the early forms of this place-name from 1235 to 1503 collected by Wyld and Hirst (‘Lanc. Place-Names,’ p. 225) only one (a.d. 1311 Salesbury) has the medial genitive -s-, other forms being Salebury2, Salebiri, and (1503) Sailebury. It is therefore not all certain that we have here to do with a pers. name (in the genit.) as the -s- may be merely euphonic. If the first element is not pers. it is prob. Old English sœl, a hall; if it is pers. it may be for Old English salo (= Old Norse söl-r), dark, or Old English sǽl, happiness (cp. Old Norse sœll, happy):-+ Old English burh, a stronghold]

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

Edward de Sarisberie, sometimes called Edward Vicecomes, was a great tenant in chief in Wiltshire and other counties, at the making of Domesday. He was a younger son of Walter de Evreux (Devereux)-one of the few instances, in those early times, of a Norman family with a Saxon name. See Hutchins' Dorset. Ellis's Introd. Domesd.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

(Saxon.) Local. A city and capital of Wiltshire, England. The town of health; the dry town. The old town of Salisbury anciently stood upon a hill where there was no water, but it is now situated in a valley, and a little brook runs through the streets. The name was sometimes written Salusbury, that is, the healthy hill or town.
