Salthouse Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of the salthouse,' the place where salt was made from sea-water by evaporation. Middle English salt, Dutch zout. v. Southouse. In the first instance below I suspect the occupation of souter (shoemaker) is accidental. But, if not, Southouse in London Directories is an abbreviation of Souter-house, the shoemaker's house. I had a Soutergate in my late parish (Ulverston), i.e. the shoemaker's road. But this abbreviation would scarcely occur in a formal record in 1379. It is far more natural to make Southouse, the surname, a variant of Salthouse. Two small places, a Salthouse in Lytham, and a Salthouse in Furness, where salt was obtained from sea-water, have originated two families of Salthouse in North Lancashire.
Simon del Southouse, souter, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Adam de Salthus, Norfolk, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
(This is the parish of Salthouse, Norfolk.)
Janet Saltehowse, of Pulton. 1562: Lancashire Wills at Richmond.
Agnes Saltus, of Ulverston, 1596. ibid.
John Salthouse, of Saltcoathouses, 1661: ibid.
William Saltus, of Banke, 1662: ibid.
(English) Dweller at a Salt- House (place where salt was made) [Middle English salthus, Old English s(e)alt-hús]
A location name in Lancashire, Norfolk.
Salthouse is a name now mostly confined to Lancashire. De Salthus was a Norfolk name in the 13th century (H. R.); there is a parish of Salthouse in that county, and De Salthouse was a common clerical name in that county in the 14th century (Blomefield's "Norfolk"). Salthouse is a Norfolk parish.
