Samakli Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The Samakli surname means 'one from the place of the fisher-men'. It comes from Arabic sammāk (سَمّاك), meaning 'fish-monger', Ottoman Turkish semmāk (سماك), meaning 'fisher-man' and -lı, meaning 'from a place'. This name was thus translated into Greek and is prevalent in the Eastern Aegean in places, i.e. Imbros, Tenedos, Lemnos etc. This co-insides with the area over which much Ottoman control was exerted. It is likely that fishing has make up much of the economy of these islands.
