Samaroo Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The surname Samaroo is derived from the Bhojpuri word shomaar, meaning 'Monday'. When the East Indian indentured laborers came to Trinidad in the 1800s, they had a tradition of naming children based on the time, day, month and horoscopes of the child. However, to do this a pundit (priest) was needed, which there were not many of in the country. Therefore, many Indians named their children based on the actual name of the day of the week on which the child was born. Hence, those born on shomaar (Monday) were either Shomaaroo, later Samaroo (boy) or Shomaria (girl). Due to the tradition of taking the father's first name as their last name, the name Samaroo then became a common surname throughout the country. As more modern Hindi and Western names began to be used over time in Trinidad, Samaroo has remained exclusively a surname.
