This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the servant of Sandy' or Saunder, i.e. Alexander; compare Addyman, Matthewman, Jackman, Ladyman, Vickerman, &c. One of a large class. Robert Sandeman, the founder of the sect styled Sandemanians, was a native of Perth. The first five of my instances occur together, settling the origin beyond dispute:

The first of the name of whom we have any authentic record is David Sandeman who lived in Alyth, Perthshire, where he was married in 1628. David Sandeman was provost of Perth, 1735-63, William Sandeman in Faulds of Banff, recorded in the parish of Alyth, 1785 (Dunkeld). From the Rev. Robert Sandeman (1718-71) the sect of Sandemanians derive their name. The first of the name may have been an incomer from Denmark. In Jutland the sandemaend (sandemand, sing.) 'men of truth,' were a constant institution, and had in the local parliament to swear about murders, assaults, rapes, and the like (Prof. Alexander Bugge).
