A popular abbreviation of Alexander, which see. Alex. Sanderis was tenant of Nether Murtoun, 1479 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 230), John Sandris was witness at Innermeth, 1546 (Rollok, 41), Thomas Sanderis or Sandirris held land in Glasgow, 1552—55 (Protocols, I), William Sanders had a lease of land in Mains of Petfirran, 1557 (Pitfirrane, 139), and James Sanderis was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1607 (NSCM., I, p. 104). James Sanderis, reider, was admitted burgess and guild brother of Glasgow, 1630, 'for service done and to be done and to give him the better curage heirefter" (Burgesses), and Robert Sanderis was retoured heir of Alexander Winchester, burgess of Banff, 1662 (Retours, Banff, 109). William Saunders (1822-1900), horticulturist and landscape gardener, born in St. Andrews, shortly after the battle of Gettysburg was commissioned to lay out the national cemetery on the field of battle.
