The Sanghai surname bearers are Marwaris (Agarwals) which is a part of the Hindu religion practiced in India. Earlier in the 1900s, there was a sudden decline in males in their family. Many of them believe it was a curse but the reason is still unknown. As the lives of males in the family were in danger, the elders decided to go to visit their Kuldevi (clan deity). They pledged among them that they will go barefooted and will blow the Shankh (divine conch), a holy shell, all the way to the temple. It is said that it helped them save their clan and thus, in appreciation, they changed their surnames to Sanghai which means 'walking together barefooted playing Shankh'.
