SANQUHAR: William de Sanchar who held land of the Abbey of Paisley in 1280 (RMP., p. 227) derived his name from Sanchar the old name of the parish of St. Quivox, Ayrshire. Michael de Schanthare was bailie of the burgh of Arne in 1365 (ER., II, p. 210). From Shanquhar, Gartly, Aberdeenshire, the following named persons most probably derived their surnames: Patricius de Sanquhare had a charter of confirmation of the land of Mure Crofte in the barony of Polgowny in 1408 (RMS., I, 907). Alexander de Sanchar was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1449 (NSCM., I, p. 11), and another Alexander Sanchar is mentioned there in 1493 (CRA., p. 50). Duncan Schanchar de Murcroft witnessed grant of the office of Derethy of Tarves in 1463 (RAA., II, p. 129), Thomas Sunquhar was vicar of the church of Kirkcaldy 1475 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 205), another Thomas Sankar was burgess of Arbroath in 1510 (RAA., II, 507) , and in 1527 John Sanchar was canon of the church of Glasgow (Cambus., 142).
