Sarralde Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
Sarralde is a Basque toponymic surname. It comes from sar or sarri, meaning 'bushiness', 'thickness', 'stubbornness', with suffixation of -alde, meaning 'side of', 'next to', 'near', concluding in 'next to the thickness'. Perhaps Sarralde should not be considered as sarri (thicket, forest, bushy), but as sarra (coarse river sand or iron slag, waste, residue). Sarra and alde offers fewer contraction problems than sarri and alde (bushy area, woodland) because in these cases the vowel 'i' is usually maintained (Sarriugarte, Sarrikobaso, Sarrigoitia, etc). It is more likely to be interpreted as the place or area of 'coarse sand' or 'gravel', 'close to the river' (thick or gravelly sands, near the river). By extension, also, it could mean a place of 'accumulation of slag or residues', given its scarce general appreciation.
