'the saucer,' i.e. a maker of sauces, a most important avocation in the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, when some seasoning, like salt-pickle, for a relish was deemed a vital necessity. Sauser. From the occupation of 'saucer,' maker of sauces, an important occupation in the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries. Du Cange defines Saucier or Saussier, "officier de cuisine chez le roi, qui a soin des sauces et des epices." in Latin documents rendered salsarius. The word in early records is sometimes misprinted sanser. Walier Salsarius purchased lampreys for William the Lion, 1214 (Annals, p. 394). Thomas Sanser (for Sauser), a clerk, witnessed a charter regarding the hostilage in Stirling, 1299 (RAA., I, p. 277). Alisaundre le Sauser, bailie and burgees of Innerkethyn, rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears a device and S' Alexandri Salsarii (Bain, II, p. 184,185). William Sauser in Edinburgh, 1357 (CDE., 6), and Thcmas Sauchar was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1447 (NSCM., I, p. 11).
