Savazzi, and its less frequent variants Savassi and Savasi, is the italicized spelling of Sabatius. These family names are particularly common in and around Mantova (English: Mantua) in Northern Italy.
In the 5th century AD, Petrus Sabatius (or Sabbatius) of illyria, son of Petrus Sabatius of Rome, married a syster of Emperor Iustinus (Justin) of the Eastern Roman Empire. They had a son, Flavius Petrus Sabatius, who was much loved by the childless Emperor and eventually chosen by him as his successor. The new Emperor took the name Iustinianus (Justinian) in commemoration of his benefactor, and became famous for re-uniting the Roman Empire, which once more became the most important Old World power and lasted for over a century afterwards, a period noted for its excellence in arts, literature and philosophy.
There is also mention of a Sabatius among the early Christian bishops, believed to be one of the founders of a monastery on the coast of the White Sea.
