Savchenko Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The surname is formed on behalf of an ancestor baptized according to the saints and named Sawa in honor of the patron saint. Bearers ancestors believed that with the formation of a surname from the baptismal name, the heavenly patron of the ancestor becomes the patron of the whole family.

The name Saava (Saaba) in the translation from the now disappeared Aramaic language meant "elder", "grandfather". Perhaps the name was given to a mature man, after the adoption of Christianity in Russia, when the baptismal names were just beginning to be used.

The basis for Savchenko's surname could also be given by other Christian names, beginning with the syllable "Sav". Among them - Savvatiy (the other Jews - Saturday), Saveliy (the other Hebrew - requested from God). Probably, the ancestor who received the name Saveliy was a long-awaited and, perhaps, the only boy in the family - the parents had the opportunity to choose in the saints a name that seemed to them the most meaningful. So in this name reflected the aspirations and hopes of the people who gave rise to the name of Savchenko.

Later, the suffix -enko joined the name, and the descendants of the "requested from God" Saveliy spread across the land and began to wear the name of Savchenko. As a rule, this way Ukrainian family models were formed, they are typical for the eastern regions of Ukraine, Belarus.

Among those, thanks to whom the name Savchenko remains inscribed in the annals of the times, is the now living Arkady Markovich Savchenko(born 1936) - a Belarusian singer (baritone), People's Artist of the USSR (1985), since 1960 a soloist of the Belarusian Opera and Ballet Theater;Igor Andreevich Savchenko(1906-1950) - Russian film director, Honored Artist of Russia (1944), who directed the films Harmon (1934), Bogdan Khmelnitsky (1941), The Third Strike (1948), Taras Shevchenko 1951). He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR three times (1942, 1949, 1952 - posthumously).

In historical chronicles Savchenko's surname is found among Cossacks and untitled noble families of the Russian Empire. It could be worn by peasants. After the abolition of serfdom, many families received a surname by name or belonging to the noble estate in which they lived.
