Another family of Savery has long been established in Devonshire, having settled at Totnes early in the 16th century; in the 17th and 18th centuries this family resided at Shilston in Modbury, and took an active part in the troubled times of the Commonwealth and of the Revolution of 1688; one of the family was high sheriff of Devon in 1619, and another member, Captain Thomas Savery, F. R. S., who flourished at the end of the 17th century, was the inventor of the first working steam - engine; the Devonshire Saverys are said to have come from Normandy (Cotton's "Totnes"). Savary was also the name of a Huguenot family established at Greenwich at the end of the 17th century, hailing originally from Perigord, in the south of France, and still represented by the Tauzia Savarys (Smiles' "Huguenots").
