User-submitted Reference

It is true we have Saint Sava /s'av'a/, who is a historical figure born in the 11 century AD, but the surname and name have as old origins as famous, unnamed, Ethiopian queen of Sheba (modern day Yemen). It is possible it came to Serbia over Jewish, meaning old and wise. Roughly, Sheba sounds like Hinduistic Shiva (Sheeva), or Šiva in Serbian, or Živa. Živa, or Siva is old Serbian religion goddes of life, and in Hindu language, Shiva also means "alive", as Živa in Serbian does. Nowadays, Sava as a feminine noun, is the longest river in former Yugoslavia. Sava is a popular white wheat bread in Serbia. Sheba (šiba) means a fighting rod in Serbian. Verb "saviti" means "to bend", and "Sava" would be "Bender" in English, just like Futurama cartoon character, so clearly, surname has no Serbian roots. Many villages is Serbia have name "Savići" plural form of Savić. Sava can both be pronounced with a long or short 'a vocal. Sava means: strong, old, wise when pronounced with short vocals, and it sounds fluent when pronounced with long first 'a. Savić is a diminutive. Old tales speak of oldest vampire in the world, Sava Savanović.
