(English) Sea-Guard (Coast-Guard) [Anglo-Saxon Sǽw(e)ard-sǽ, sea + w(e)ard, guard] Sǽward was the name of one of the three pagan sons (the others were Seaxréd and Sigeberht) of Sǽberht, king of Essex (d. a.d. 616).
The Domesday form was Sauardus; the Hundred-Rolls (Norf.) form Saward.

An ancient Teutonic personal name. Anglo-Saxon sae, the sea, and weard, a keeper-the Guardian of the Sea; a fit name for a great naval commander; indeed it was an official, as well as a personal name, and was applied to the high-admiral of Saxon times. It is latinized Siwardus. The hamlets of Sewardstone, in Essex, and Sewardesley, in Northamptonshire, seem to have been so designated from ancient proprietors of this name.

In the 17th century there was an old Exeter family of Seaward: to this family belonged Sir Edward Seaward, formerly mayor of Exeter, who died in 1703 at the age of 70 (P.). A knightly family of Seaward, perhaps the same, resided at Clyst S. George Court in the 17th century (Ellacombe's "Clyst S. George").
