(a) Local, 'of Salesbury.' The Lancashire Salisburys hail from Salesbury, a village-parish between Blackburn and Ribchester. The corruption is a very slight one, and simply imitative of the name of the southern cathedral city.
Ralph Salisbury, of Hindley, 1670: Wills at Chester.
Ann Salisbury, of Hindley, 1674: ibid.
Thomas Salisbury, of Chipping, 1669: Lancashire Wills at Richmond.
Richard Salisbury, of Chipping, 1663: ibid.
Henry Salisbury, of Chepin, 1626 ibid.
The last three entries place my statement of a local Lancashire origin beyond the range of controversy.

[
(English) Dweller in, or near, a hall; one who worked in the dining hall; one who came from Sale (sallow), in Cheshire.
Edward de Sarisberie, sometimes called Edward Vicecomes, was a great tenant in chief in Wiltshire and other counties, at the making of Domesday. He was a younger son of Walter de Evreux (Devereux)-one of the few instances, in those early times, of a Norman family with a Saxon name. See Hutchins' Dorset. Ellis's Introd. Domesd.
(Saxon.) Local. A city and capital of Wiltshire, England. The town of health; the dry town. The old town of Salisbury anciently stood upon a hill where there was no water, but it is now situated in a valley, and a little brook runs through the streets. The name was sometimes written Salusbury, that is, the healthy hill or town.
