This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the senior,' i.e. the older of two or more persons, generally of the same personal name. This mode of expression is as early as the 13th and 14th centuries, and is very commonly found in the Yorkshire Poll Tax, 1379. The cause is simple. Robert Senzour was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1475, John Senzour in 1515, and William Sengzeour in 1578 (NSCM., I, p. 25, 46, 73). Thomas Senzeor was resident in Balward (Bal-vaird) in 1513 (Cambus., 9), John Senzeour was burgess of Aberdeen, 1522 (CRA.,p. 100), and William Sinzour, witness in Edinburgh, 1541 (SCM., IV, p. 38). Archibald Senyeoure rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the burgh of Aberdeen, 1565 (ER., xut, p. 299), Thomas Sennzeor in Lethame, 1581 (Retours, Fife, 1467), James Senzour, bailie of burgh of Cupar, 1690 (Inquis., 7064), and John Sunzeour in Pitgomoch, Fife, is in record in 1633 (RPC., 2. ser.
