Scaddan Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Though this name has not been dealt with by O'Donovan, Woulfe, Matheson or any other authority on Irish surnames it is on record in this country since l299 when an entry in the Justiciary Rolls records that one Martin Scadan was concerned in a Tipperary trespass case. One of the name was a juror in the county in 1312 and in 1314; another was pardoned at the same time for a murder for which he had been found guilty. In the Ormond deeds it occurs frequently, from the beginning of the fourteenth century, as also does the place-name Scadanstown which was in the Clonmel area: I say was, as this place is not to be found in modern lists of townlands or parishes. It is noticeable that in no instance I have met does the prefix O occur with this name; and, since in the mediaeval records O and Mac were rarely ommitted from Gaelic surnames, it is probable that, notwithstanding its Irish appearance, Scaddan is not a Gaelic Irish name. It was formerly often spelt Scadan, and scadán is the Irish word for herring, but that may be regarded as a coincidence.
This name is now very rare, surviving as Scadding, but it is of frequent occurrence in mediaeval records in Cos. Tipperary and Kilkenny. The derivation is obscure; in spite of its Gaelic appearance it does not appear to be of Irish origin. SIF 134
