Scallan Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Ó Scealláin A Co. Wexford name distinct from the northern Scullin. SIF 134
The theory that Scallan is a southern form of the Ulster name Scullin or Scullion is hardly tenable.
The latter, as stated in More Irish Families (p. 274), was an erenagh family of the diocese of Derry, and it is true that the northern Ó Scolláin has occasionally been anglicized as Scallon, but Scallan has always been mainly associated with Co. Wexford. In the “census” of 1659, for example, ten families of Scallan and nine of Skallan are recorded in the barony of Forth. Griffith's Valuation of two centuries later records 22 householders in that barony and 72 in the whole county.
