Scarry Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

There are two Irish names anglicized as above: Ó Scurra, one of the six “Sodhans” * of Uí Maine, and Ó Scoireadh of Counties Waterford and Kilkenny. Scarry and Scurry seem to have been used indifferently as anglicized forms in both those areas. In the latter Scarry appears quite frequently around Callan where David Scarry was a merchant in 1519 and others of the name were farmers there later in that century; Scarry is found in Waterford to-day, while the lexicographer and grammarian, whose works are in the manuscript department of the British Museum, is called James Scurry in English and a century ago Waterford births were registered as Scurry. At that time the registrations in the Uí Maine country (in Connacht) were spelt Scarry and several families so called are resident in east Galway at the present time.
