An Orcadian surname from Scarth in the parish of Firth. Fene (i.e. Finn or Finne) Skatht was one of the witnesses to a charter of sale in Orkney in 1482 (Old Lore Miscellany, IV, p. 66), and Andro Scarth was member of assize of lawting at Kirkwall in 1514 (OSR., r, p. 254). The name of Donald Scoocht, father-in-law of and agent for Elene, Marioun, and Katryne Clouchston (or Clou-ston) in Orkney in 1528 may be an error for Scatht or Scartht (ibid.,p. 108). The name occurs several times in local records (REO., p. 84, 87,195, 209). Skartht 1510, Scart 1686.
