Schaaper Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The Schaaper surname comes from the Dutch word for 'shepherd', he who takes care of the sheep. In Dutch schaap means 'sheep'. In earlier days these shepherds were wage-earners. They let themselves hire by farmers to take the flock to the fields and so earn some money. Because of erosion of the poor soil less and less sheep were kept. The Schaapers had to look for other work and moved to more prosperous parts of the country, mainly the west. There they earned an income as farmer hand or farmer with cattle. In the 20th century they are also to be found as butchers. The surname Schaaper with double a could mean that these folks were Catholic as to distinct Schaper with only one a, who were predominantly Dutch Reformed protestants.
