SCHACKLOCK: This rare surname, apparently now extinct, is probably of territorial origin from a small land of the same name (Schakelok) near Stirling, which in 1445 belonged to the Abbey of Cambuskenneth (Cambus., 214). The Schacklocks of Annanie were an old family in the parish of Maryton in Angus, and several individuals of the name are mentioned in the fourteenth century. The earliest occurrence of the name appears to be in 1315, in which year Agnes de Montfort granted a half davat of the land of Slains to Symon called Shakloch (HMC., 8. Rep., p. 300). In 1328 Walter Shakloc granted a charter of his lands of Inieney and a third part of the town of the same name near Montrose to Henricus de Rossy (RAA., I, p. 339). This grant was confirmed by King Robert Bruce in September of the same year (ibid., p. 340). In 1367 Christian, relict of John de Montefort, made a donation of the lands of Kinneff, Slains, etc., to Symon Schaklok (RMS., I, 268). Andree Johnsoun dictus Schaklok is mentioned in 1438 (SCM., V, p. 44), and Robert Schaklok was prior of the Friars Preachers of Perth in 1460 (Milne, p. 42). This is also an English surname. Guppy (p. 138) records from the Hundred Rous a (13 cent.) Hamo Shakeloc in Cambridgeshire. A shakelock, according to Halliwell, was a turnkey, and as Ewen says (p. 226) such a name might therefore be an occupational description, and cites (p. 319,320) "Rog. Schakeloc, Gloucester, 1186-7" from the Pipe Roll. The 1315 reference above also points to a descriptive name.
