User-submitted Reference

Schiavon could have come from the word schiavo, which means 'slave' in Italian, but it was also the name of a group of soldiers that came from the region that is today in Croatia who went to Venice to help protect the city to fight against the Serbians. There is also a sword in Italy (you can find it in many museums in there) named after the Schiavons. And a famous "road" (there are called vias in Venice) near the Piazza San Marco in Venice called Via Delgi Schiavoni that means Via of the Schiavons.
