Scholfield Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(Scandinavian + English) belonging to Scholefield or Scolefield (Lancs), 14th cent. Scholefeld, Scolefeld = the Hut- or Shed-Field [Middle English sc(h)ole, a form of Old Norse skáli, a hut, shed + Middle English Old English feld] It is tempting to see the Middle English scole, ‘a school,’ in this name; but analogy is against the assumption. The various Northern places called ‘Scholes’ correspond with the various Northern ‘Scales’; the Manx ‘Sc(h)olaby,’ e.g., was formerly Scaleby; and the Middle English scole, ‘a bowl,’ is the Old Norse skál.
