A surname of rare occurrence, and seemingly to be met with in Fife alone, and there mainly about Auchtermuchty. It is of local origin from "terris de Kilquhiss Wester, quarum terrae, vulgo vocatae lie Schulbraidis de Kilquhiss" (Sc. Ant., VI p. 40). Thomas Schoolbraids, portioner of Auchtermuchtie, was retoured heir of lands in Fife in 1661 (Retours, Fife, 904), and John Shoulbread or Shoolbraid was F. C-minister of Mortlach, 1816—75. Ilar rison's explanation, at least in so far as the Scottish surname is concerned, is nonsense. Schoolbraid 1663, Schoolbreads and Scholbreads 1604.
