From the occupation, ME. sclater(e, one whose trade is to lay slates on roofs of houses. Henry Sclatur was concerned in a charge of breaking the peace in Aberdeen in 1399 (CRA., p. 377) Robert Sklatare sold his tenement in Glasgow in 1430 (LCD., p. 247), John Sclater was a burgess of Arnbroath in 1458 (RAA., II, p. 99), and another John Sclatar witnessed a Forfarshire obligation in 1497 (ibid., p. 308). Payment was made in 1508 to William Sclater for repairs to the roof of the church of Holy Trinity, Edinburgh, for himself and two men "for xii dais dennar and noneschankis v li" (Soltre, p. 162), and John Sklaitter was slater of the palace and church of Dunkeld in 1514 (Rent. Dunk., p. 146). The surname appears in Shetland in 1612 and in 1616 in which year Nicoll Sclaitter or Sklaitter in Skallowaybanlds appears on assize (MCM., II, p. 166; OSR., I, p. 241). William Sklaitter of Burnes was retoured heir of John Sklaitter of Burnes in 1662 (Retours, Orkney and Shetland, 93). Within recent years most bearers of this name in Shetland have adopted the spelling of Slater and Slatter, whereas the majority of the Orcadian bearers of the name still retain the old spelling of Sclater. Sclatter 1683, Sklaiter 1571, Sklaither 1663, Sklaitter 1609, Sklatter 1640, Skleater 1664, Skleatter 1636.
