Scobell Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

According to Hals, this name, in the old Cornish language, signifies the broom-plant, and therefore takes its place, etymologically, with the illustrious Plantagenet. The family, whose original habitat was the counties of Cornwall and Devon, have flourished, for a long series of generations, in knightly and gentle degree, in that part of England, and have written their name Scobbahull, Scobhull, Scobbel, Scobhill, Scoble, &c. The first of the name on record is Thomas de Scobbahull, sheriff of Devonshire, in 1291. B.L.G. Scovell is not, as it might seem, a modification of this surname.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

This family have flourished for many generations in Cornwall and Devon. The first on record is Thomas de Scobbahull, sheriff of Devonshire in 1291. The name is also found written Scobhull, Scobhill, Scobbel, Scobel, Schobell, Scobhall, Shovel, and Scoble, and, according to Hals, signifies in Cornish the broom-plant. I doubt much its Cornish origin, and think it may be the same as Svovell (H. R. Do Scoville, De Scovile), from Escoville, now Ecoville, arrond. Caen, Normandy.

Patronymica Cornu-Britannica (1870) by Richard Stephen Charnock

Amongst the old Cornish families now scantily represented is that of Scoble. The Seobles or Scobells have flourished in Cornwall and Devon, both in knightly and gentle degree, since the 13th century (L.).
