A surname of Orkney and Shetland. Derived b Jacobsen from Skali, now the place name Skaill, probably Skaill in Sandwick. Villiam Skollair was cited in 1566 to appear for contumacy (REO., p. 373), David Scola was burgess of Kirkwall in 1574, and Mathew Scolla and his brother sold land in the township of Isbister in 1595 (ibid., p. 293 373n). James Scollay of Toftis was retoured heir of David Scollay of Tofts, his father, 1617, and Edward Scollay was retoured heir of Duncan Scollay, burgess of Kirkwall, proovus, in 1628 (Retours, Orkney and Shetland, 5, 11).
