Scollock Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

SCOLOC: In the mediaeval Celtic Church the scolocs or scologs (in Latin record clerici nativi) were the lowest members of the order in a monastic community. They occupied the scoloc or scholar lands from which they were bound to supply clerks who could read and sing. At a later date they appear rather in the character of husbandmen or mere tenants of the church lands. In some charters the scolocs appear as bondmen. Thus in the Register of Dunfermline (p. 221) John Scoloc and Adam his son appear as 'native men' of the abbey. The name here is obviously personal or official for although it was borne by two or perhaps three generations of bondmen they neither inherited it from their forefathers nor transmitted it to their descendants. Ricard Scoloc is witness to a transaction between the prior of St. Andrews and Serlo de Lascelles concerning the lands of Ryhinche in the parish of Forgrund in 1288 (RPSA., p. 346). Gillemor Scolgo de Tarualont appears in record in 1222 (Illus., II, p. 19). Riscoloc, probably for Ri Scoloc, appears on an assize of marches in Fife in 1230 (RD., p. 111). Donald Williamsone alias Skallag, mair and officer to the earl of Sutherland, is in record in 1230 (OPS., II, p. 666). Reginald of Durham in his Book of the Miracles of S. Cuthbert has a chapter (85) with the title De Scholastico quodam Pictorum temerario. It relates to a Piet of Kirkcudbright who in 1164 broke the peace of S. Cuthbert's cemetery by a bullfight on S. Cuthbert's day, and speaks of "clerici qui Pictorum lingua Scollofthes cognominantur." Nicholson says a scribe, or else the editor of the printed text, has misread i as f. The word is obviously Scollostes and so (f. 99) reads in the Bodleian ms. Fairfax 6, which was not used by the editor. The word is borrowed from Latin apparently, however, not from scholasticus itself, but from a Latinized form of the Greek σχολαστής (KR., p. 185). See also under Askalok.
