From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Most probably derived from the hamlet of Old Scone in the southeast of Perthshire. Ysaac de Scone witnessed a quitclaim of the land of Drumkarauch in 1260 (RPSA., p. 346), and Symone de Scone appears as abbot of Inchaffray in 1365 (Incimffray, p. 127). Jonne de Scone was one of the masons who contracted for the building of five chapels on the south side of St. Giles's parish church, Edinburgh, in 1387 (CDE., p. 14; Egidii, p. 24), and the name is also found in Edinburgh in 1648 as Skune, and in 1691 as Scoon (Edinb, Marr,), Thomas Scone was tenant of the "half towun" of Balgirscho in Perthshire in 1542 (Cupar-Angus, II, p. 185). The old family of de Scone were probably descendants of Malothen, vice-comes de Scone in the reign of Alexander I. William Scoon died in Kelso, 1940.
