From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A surname found in the shires of Fife and Clackmannan, and more probably derived from Scotland (-Well) in the parish of Portmoak, Kinross-shire, than from the national name. The references favor this view.

Richard de Scocia was clericus regis, c. 1178—80 (RAA I, p. 12). Payment to John of Scotland (Descoce), esquire of the king, was made in 1445 (Bain, IV, 1177). John Scotland was retoured heir of Thomas Scotland in Dollarbeg in part of the lands of Sheardells in the parish of Dollar in 1675 (Retours, Clackmannan, 42), Charles Scotland, councillor in Burntisland, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV p. 413), and George Scotland of Kincardine wrote a testimonial in favor of Lord Dundonald's coaltar for ships in 1784.
