User-submitted Reference
This is a Norman surname whose origins lie in the French village of Escoville in Normandy. The first known record of a Scoville in England was one Ralph d'Escoville in 1194, who held several estates and whose family had likely come to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. His children were generally known by the surname "de Scoville," and in the ensuing generations, the name took its current, shortened form of Scoville.
In America, most (if not all) Scovilles can trace their roots to a pair of English brothers, Arthur and John Scoville, who were born in Dorset and came to Connecticut in the mid 17th Century. Even today, there are many Scovilles living in the area where they first settled in New Haven, Connecticut. Remnants of their legacy can be seen in streets named after the family, and the Scoville Memorial Library in Salisbury, CT.
