If, however, ‘Scrat(t)on’ were really a distinct place-name the first element might be that seen in ‘Scratby’ (Norfolk), which one could have considered to be referable to a pers. name or nickname from Old Norse skratti, ‘wizard,’ ‘magician,’ if it did not apparently occur as Scroutebi in an 11th- cent. land-grant (‘Cart. Sax.’ no. 1017).
