Scroggs Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the lands of Scrogges in the barony of Stobo, Peeblesshire. Robert de Scrogges lost his life in the service of David de Lyne, and because of that his son Simon had a grant of the lands of Scrogges, c. 1208, from David de Line, and a few years later he sold the lands to Walter, bishop of Glasgow (REG., p. 73, 75, 76). Adam of Skrogges, burgess of Haddington, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 197), and the name of William del Skogges of Peeblesshire who rendered homage in the same year (ibid., p. 208) is perhaps from the same source. The surname early travelled north to Aberdeen, appearing there in the latter half of the fourteenth century. In 1398 David de Scrogis was elected common councillor of Aberdeen and in the following year he granted a charter in favor of the Carmelites (CRA., p. 374; Friars, p. 22). John de Scrogis, "prepositus" of Aberdeen, was a charter witness in 1436 (REA., I, p. 234), and still provost in 1449 (NSCM., I, p. 12). Alexander Scrogges was master of the ship Nicholas of Aberdeen in 1439 (Bain, IV, 1130). Scrogs 1444, Scroggis 1399.
