V. Skidmore.
Sir Alan Scudamore is said to have been a person of importance in Monmouthshire, in the reign of William Rufus, and Walter de Scudamore was lord of Upton, co. Wilts, in the reign of Stephen. The name is unquestionably Norman, and is said to be derived from the Old French escu d'amour, ' the shield of love,' in allusion probably to some incident. The family motto sanctions this etymology, being "Scuto Amoris Divini"-Defended by the Shield of Divine Love.

Walter de Escudemore, Normandy 1195 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). In 1165 Geoffry de Scudimore was a baron in Wilts (Lib. Niger), and had subenfeoffed Waleran de Scudimore and Walter Gifford. He also held four fees of ancient enfeoffment from Robert D’Evias of Hereford (Ib.). Hence the Viscounts Scudamore.

Skidmore may or may not be a form of Scudamore, an ancient Herefordshire name. The Skidmores were established in Eyam in the 17th and 18th centuries, where several of them were killed by the plague in 1666 (W.). De Skidemore and Skidemore were Wiltshire names in the 13th century (H. R.).
The Scudamores for centuries were a distinguished and powerful county family, occupying at intervals the office of sheriff during the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, and representing the city of Hereford in Parliament for many years during the last century.
