According to widespread oral tradition the Seay family of colonial Virginia are of Irish origin and the original surname was O'Shea. Some say the family hailed from Kilkenny. The earliest known Seay was Mathew Seay, who is first recorded in Virginia in 1685. Early mentions of Mathew record him as See, Sey and Sea. The surname Seay is first recorded in 1721/22, when he is mentioned in a transaction for a parcel of land.
